Instead, local residents and global mining giants vied for the opportunity to explore for the legendary sunken gold that may lie beyond the aurumrich beaches of Nome.
One of the largest gold discoveries in Alaska''s history was the gold on the beaches at present day Nome, Alaska. Thousands of gold miners flooded into the remote area, and soon the beaches were transformed. At the edge of the Bering Sea, men prospected for gold in the sands up and down the beach.
Enough gold was recovered between 1904 and 1906 from a drift mine on one claim to make the operator a millionaire. Beach deposits have been a major source of gold in the Nome area since the present beach was found to be auriferous in 1899.
